Tips from Kolaveri Di to secure your career

While the nation is effervescently rhyming with the beats of Tamil song “Why this Kolaveri di?” there is this monster called recession silently trying to make inroads into our happiness. The United Nations has set the scarecrow in action by projecting that the world economy is likely to further slowdown in 2012. UN’s World Economic Situation and Prospects 2012 report has cut the global growth forecast for next year to 2.6% from 4% in 2010.

Think of the word recession and the “dirty picture” of “job cuts” & “layoffs” gets displayed on our memory screen. Unemployment has become almost synonymous with recession. The country has managed to wriggle out of the 2008 subprime fiasco and I am sure we are not prepared to face yet another era of slowdown blues. The fact is that at an individual level one cannot do much to stop the impending slump as it is a global issue. What do you do, when you cannot change the circumstances? Change yourself, Isn’t it? Getting scared is not enough, one should switch on the career saver strategies at work. The million dollar question is “what changes in work behavior would help an individual to safeguard career?”.
Here I present some lessons drawn from the song Kolaveri di which suggests how to make our career recession proof.

Be Innovative & Creative :


Tough times never last but innovative people do. The innovative exposition of the song Kolaveri makes it recognisable. People of all ages might not like the song but none can stop it from getting registered in the brain cells. Likewise an innovative employee has multiple strengths. Such a person is often looked upon to by the management whenever there is a challenging situation. Be creative and keep delivering results. A crisis saver in the organization never gets a pink slip.

Be Different

You will agree that the song Kolaveri is absolutely different. Right from lyrics to video the song is incommensurable. When the business does not see a growth with and routine strategies go bust, companies are forced to be different. In the cluttered market place it is imperative to stand apart from the crowd. When recession strikes and job cuts are on card, the first to be sacked are the commoners, the one’s who are not distinguished. It is strongly advised to be identified as a person with exceptional skill sets. Being different in approach could be a career saver skill for you.

Be in rhythm :

“Why this Kolaveri di? is a song full of meaningless sentences ( if any) but still sounds interesting. Even the absurdity of words rhyme with the flow of the song and that’s the key reason behind its success. Come to the corporate world and there are times when logistics do not work out the way one desires. You might want to execute some strategy but the management might be planning something else. When times are not smooth never break the rhythm, try to ride the wave till you hit the shore. Your being in sync with the organizational tune will help you propitiate the management. Essence is to shed all inhibitions, learn to be different and still be in the organizational rhythm.

Be Fast :
It is said that the lyrics of Kolaveri Di got scribbled just in about 20 minutes. Even the song was released before the scheduled release date. The message drawn is “be fast, be first”. To insulate ones career from the shock of recession it is mandatory to be smart, swift and efficient. You are less likely to face the heat of slump if you are ahead of others in the organization. Being quick in your response will help you insinuate yourself into the managements perception. Admonition here is be quick but never be hasty in your actions.

Be involved :
It’s important to be involved in your work. Love your work. Be persistent even when things do not go your way. Generally employees preempt doom and prematurely start behaving desperate. Do not give in to peer grape wine. An organization is always keen to survive out of the tide. Job cut is one of the tools used to save cost but generally it is not the first to be used. There are many other interventions related to inventory and financial austerity which an organization deploys first.

Munni Badnam Hui & the famous Sheela has been the talk of the town for quite some time now…. Both these numbers have been dominating the world of music and rhythm across the nation.

There is a real life story going behind this badnam munni which only a few would know. In the song lyrics, there is a stanza where the following words are used : mai Zandu Balm hui….” . The whole story evolves around the usage of word “zandu balm” in the song. Zandu is a brand owned by the Emami group which is a brand leader in over the counter (OTC) pain relief ointment segment. The bone of contention has been the use of the word Zandu Balm in the song.. rather the mis-use of the brand Zandu balm.

The owners of brand Zandu had an objection that their patented brand name was mis-represented in the song and used without prior permission. It is perceived widely that Zandu has not been mentioned with a positive connotation in the song though it does not get noticed so apparently. Why only Zandu balm, Munni could have as well said “mai Godrej hui, or mai Dettol hui etc. The owners of Zandu brand were hurt as they foresaw the probability of an impending profitability loss because of the dent the song would cause to the brand perception. Ultimately in September 2010 Emami served a legal notice to Arbaz Khan Productions, the producers of movie Dabang, citing copyright infringement.

The tussle went through a few rounds of to & fro exchange of views and finally what comes out over a period of time is that both the parties find an out of the court amicable solution. A win – win formulate was evolved where in Emami got the rights for the song ‘Munni Badnam hui’ from T-Series & in return they withdrew their charges in the court of law. The deal does not stop here, going ahead Mallika Arora Khan ( the munni girl in the song) would sign a two year contract with Emami group to promote the brand Zandu through commercial advertisement as a brand ambassador.

This is a classic case study where the two parties fighting over an issue join hands to evolve a win win solution. All of us are aware of the Hare and the Tortoise story where the tortoise wins the race because he went ahead in a consistent fashion toward its goal. The hare was over confidant and hence had to loose. There are new versions available for the same story. In the next race the hare learns the lesson and decides not to stop but to keep running till he hits the target and ultimately he wins. The tortoise again challenges the hare and this time it was decided to have the target across the river. Hare ran fast but could not swim across the river and lost to tortoise again. Finally both the hare and the tortoise decided to join hands; tortoise climbed on hares back to run and reach the river bank from where on they exchanged their seats! Both of them jointly achieved their target with a record performance!

In our society we come across so many situations where two parties with similar interests keep fighting over an issue. Similarity of interest is generally perceived as CLASH of interest and people keep fighting to secure their interest first! All such disputes ultimately end up cultivating huge losses to both the parties in terms of time, money and resources. A lot of opportunities for growth & positive development is lost in the process and actually goes unaccounted!

We have witnessed business tycoons and industrial houses fighting over issues for ages in our country. Just imagine if they had not fought but opted to co-operate and work together! Surely it would have delivered much profitable results for all.

From our childhood days we learn only about win lose games. Games children play have a winning team and a loosing team. In school and at home children should be taught to play games where there could be more than one winner. Why is it must that if one child wins, the other child has to loose! Earlier the lesson is learnt, better it will be for the society of tomorrow. Lets visualize a new generation with all winners and no loosers.

If we look at the Munni song from the angle of this lesson, surly we could bet Munni badnam nahi hui, but Munni WINNER hui! ( Munni did not get a bad name, actually she is a winner )!

सीबीएसई : एप्टीट्यूड टेस्ट जनवरी में September 27, 2010

सीबीएसई ने दसवीं क्लास के
स्टूडेंट्स के लिए ‘ एप्टीट्यूड टेस्ट ‘ कंडक्ट करने का फैसला किया है। टेस्ट में अब्जेक्टिव टाइप क्वेश्चन होंगे और इस टेस्ट को शुरू करने का मकसद स्टूडेंट्स की मेंटल एबिलिटी को परखना है। जिस तरह से प्रतियोगी परीक्षाएं होती हैं , उसी तर्ज पर एप्टीट्यूड टेस्ट में क्वेश्चन आएंगे। सीबीएसई चेयरमैन विनीत जोशी ने एनबीटी को बताया कि यह टेस्ट जनवरी 2011 में होगा। इस टेस्ट के जरिए स्टूडेंट्स व पैरंट्स को 11 वीं क्लास में स्ट्रीम चुनने में भी मदद मिलेगी। 10 वीं के बाद स्कूलों और स्टूडेंट्स को यह समस्या रहती है कि किस स्ट्रीम को चुने लेकिन एप्टीट्यूड टेस्ट के जरिए यह प्रोसेस आसान हो सकता है।

सीबीएसई चेयरमैन का कहना है कि वैसे तो यह टेस्ट ऑप्शनल रखा गया है , जो स्टूडेंट्स चाहेंगे , उनके लिए ही टेस्ट कंडक्ट होगा लेकिन इस टेस्ट में ज्यादा से ज्यादा स्टूडेंट्स के शामिल होने की उम्मीद है। जोशी ने बताया कि टेस्ट स्कूल में ही होगा और एक ही दिन और एक ही समय पर होगा। बोर्ड क्वेश्चन पेपर की बुकलेट स्कूलों को भेज देगा। बोर्ड ने स्कूलों से स्टूडेंट्स की लिस्ट भी मांगी है ताकि क्वेश्चन पेपर की बुकलेट तैयार की जा सकें। एक – दो दिन में बोर्ड इस टेस्ट को लेकर सर्कुलर भी जारी करने वाला है।

उन्होंने बताया कि बोर्ड ने 10 वीं क्लास के स्टूडेंट्स के लिए कन्टिन्यूअस एंड कॉम्प्रीहेंसिव इवैल्यूशन ( सीसीई ) स्कीम लागू की है और इस स्कीम में स्टूडेंट्स को तरह – तरह की एक्टिवटी में भाग लेने को प्रेरित किया जाता है। एप्टीट्यूड टेस्ट के जरिए यह पता चल सकेगा कि स्टूडेंट्स की नॉलेज कितनी है और उसका कौशल किस तरह का है ? टेस्ट में शामिल होने वाले स्टूडेंट्स को बोर्ड की ओर से सर्टिफिकेट भी मिलेगा।

न्यू स्टेट अकादमी , पीतमपुरा की प्रिंसिपल डॉ . संगीता भाटिया का कहना है कि एप्टीट्यूड टेस्ट में कंटेंट बेस्ड नहीं होगा बल्कि इसमें ऐसे क्वेश्चन होंगे , जिन्हें वे स्टूडेंट्स आसानी से हल कर सकेंगे , जिन्होंने अपने सब्जेक्ट को समझा हैै। करियर ऑप्शन के लिहाज से भी इस तरह के टेस्ट फायदेमंद हैं। अगर एप्टीट्यूड टेस्ट में साइंस , मैथ्स , न्यूमैरिकल्स , सोशल साइंस हर स्ट्रीम से क्वेश्चन होंगे।

डॉ . भाटिया ने बताया कि बोर्ड ने करीब 100 स्कूलों में टेस्ट को लेकर सैंपल सर्वे भी कराया था और स्टूडेंट्स इस टेस्ट को लेकर उत्साहित नजर आए। एयरफोर्स बाल भारती स्कूल , लोदी रोड के प्रिंसिपल आनंद स्वरूप का कहना है कि बोर्ड की नई स्कीम में प्रफिशन्सी टेस्ट के अलावा अब एप्टीट्यूड टेस्ट शुरू करने का फैसला आने वाले समय में काफी फायदेमंद साबित होगा।

गौरतलब है कि बोर्ड अगले साल मई – जून में ऑप्शनल प्रफिशन्सी टेस्ट भी कंडक्ट शुरू करने जा रहा है और यह टेस्ट सभी पांच सब्जेक्ट इंग्लिश , हिंदी , सोशल साइंस , मैथ्स और साइंस के लिए होगा। इसमें 9 वीं व 10 वीं के सिलेबस से जुड़े और आसान से लेकर मुश्किल हर तरह के सवाल होंगे।

A BIT of HABIT – Taking Notes Improves Performance August 10, 2010

One of my ex boss liked me as a subordinate only because of my habit of taking notes. More than a decade back while I was working with an organization in Pune my immediate superior used to like me a lot & publicly applaud that he liked my habit of taking notes of all that he spoke in the meeting. I took notes not only of all what he said in the meeting but of all what I said and a brief of most of what was said by the others in the meeting hall. Even in a one to one meeting I used to take notes and this habit continues even today.

In today’s world taking notes is only the prerogative of either the students or the secretary! Apart from these two we can not see anyone else taking notes (of course I exclude the press journalists here!). My recommendation to all young managers & professionals is that one should get into the habit of taking notes. This habit shall come very handy for all of you in your career progress.

When you take notes the first and the most prominent benefit is that important data is not lost. As per one survey an average mind encounters more than 100000 thought stimulus every day. In such a cluttered mind space it will be expecting too much from our mind to store, remember & recall elementary data! Also this tends to reduce the efficiency of brain a la the cookies in the computer system!

When we take notes we ensure that the date and timing of the event is recorded. In the event one has to recall dates referring to any important event of the past the notes diary can come handy. Refer to this diary and you instantly recall the events not only in brief but also in elaborate context. The catch here is to use a date diary and not just a note pad!

The habit of taking notes also helps us to act. What has been written down in our diary gets reminded repeatedly and the chances are that we do not skip on action. Overall performance on an individual increases when notes are recorded. Check with a few of the successful professionals in your social sphere, be it a principle or businessman if they take notes. I am sure majority would respond in affirmative.

However when I suggest to take notes I do not mean to take down the complete lecture of the speech given by your boss.. Nope. Taking important notes is also an art one should learn. In school we were taught to create brief synopsis of a lengthy lesson. Short notes has been taught to us right at the stage of primary schooling. Taking notes in the business sphere is just an application of this lesson.

What is required is to identify the keywords in every sentence. This keyword should be enough for one to recall the complete sentence. When your boss or the client speaks in front of you, you should be in a position to smartly scribble the keywords of the communication without loosing the eye contact. If you loose the eye contact you will loose the other persons interest and attraction. The notes has to be neat & concise. After the discussion is over immediately refer to the notes taken and in case any word has been sketched illegible – set it right then and there itself, lest you tend to forget or misinterpret in future.

I have observed one more benefit of taking notes, when you take notes you make the person on the other side feel important. Moreover he knows he needs to talk absolutely sense not just beat about the bush! All this ensures quality & content in the communication. You finish up the key issues fast and wastage of time is also avoided.
Overall it is indeed a good habit for all of us to take notes. Try it once and see the impact, I am sure you will get into this fruitful habit. Remember HABIT once formed is difficult to loose… you give away H, A BIT remains, you loose A, BIT of it remains, let go off the B .. “IT” still remains!

Panel suggests 70% weight for Class 12 marks in IIT entry June 24, 2010

NEW DELHI: In what may mark a major shift away from the current scheme of admission to the country’s bluechip engineering institutions, an HRD ministry panel has recommended 70% weightage to class XII marks and 30% for performance in an aptitude test to be conducted more than once a year, for the IIT-Joint Entrance Examination.

A cut-off list on the basis of the class XII result and the aptitude test will be prepared in the month of June every year and the top 40,000 will have to take the additional test for IITs. Right now, more than four lakh students appear for IIT-JEE in a single test.

The panel headed by Damodar Acharya, director of IIT Kharagpur, that gave its report to HRD minister Kapil Sibal on Wednesday, has also suggested that the aptitude test be an ongoing affair which students can take more than once.

However, the best score in the aptitude test — which will have questions on reasoning, numerical ability and communication skills — should be taken into account. It is only the add-on test for the top students that will have questions on physics, mathematics and chemistry. However, the panel has put a restriction on the number of times the add-on test can be taken.

Also, unlike the present system, right at the beginning, students will have to give their choice of IIT or other institutes — like Indian Institute of Science Education & Research — whose admission test is conducted through JEE. Students will also have to spell out their choice of branch of engineering or stream of pure science.

HRD sources said the ministry’s first task would be to bring all state boards as well as CBSE on par with each other by developing a comprehensive weighted performance index so that there is no gross inequality among them and students do not suffer. Already, a core science and mathematics syllabus has been mooted by the HRD ministry and approved by the Council of Board of Secondary Education. “The move will ensure that students from small towns and even those who cannot afford expensive coaching can aim to be in IITs,” a source said

रोजगार के लिए प्रभावी शिक्षा’ June 9, 2010

भारत, चीन और संयुक्त अरब अमीरात (यूएई) जैसे देशों के स्कूलों और कालेजों में इस तरह की शिक्षा नहीं दी जाती जो रोजगार केअनुकूल हो। यह बात एक अध्ययन में सामने आई है। इस अध्ययन को भारत, चीन, दक्षिण अफ्रीका, ब्राजील और यूएई को केंद्र बिंदुमें रखकर किया गया है। ब्रिटिश संस्था ‘एडएक्सेल’ ने इसी महीने अध्ययन को जारी किया है। अध्ययन के अनुसार, “विभिन्न कम्पनियों में रोजगार पाने के लिए आवश्यक कौशल और ज्ञान का स्कूलों, कॉलेजों एवं विश्वविद्यालयों में दी जा रही शिक्षा से कोई मेल नहीं है।” एडएक्सेल के अंतर्राष्ट्रीय मार्केटिंग प्रबंधक क्लैरे स्टुअर्ट ने पिछले सप्ताह आईएएनएस से कहा, “हमारा मानना है कि भारत में अध्ययन की एक संस्कृति को पैदा करने, काम में महिलाओं को और स्थान देने, शिक्षा और रचनात्मकता पर केंद्रित व्यवसायों का विकास करने और विचार व ज्ञान आधारित अर्थव्यवस्था पर ध्यान दिया जाना चाहिए।” उन्होंनेकहा, “हम इसी वर्ष अक्टूबर में भारत में एक ऐसी परियोजना को व्यवस्थित करेंगे जिसमें उद्योग जगत के अनुकूल योग्यताओं को विकसित किया जा सके और व्यावसायिक शिक्षा प्रणाली को नया रूप दिया जा सके।” साल भर तक चले इस अध्ययन ‘रोजगार के लिए प्रभावी शिक्षा’ (ईईई) के लिए इन पांच देशों में 2,000 शिक्षकों और कर्मचारियों का साक्षात्कार किया गया। एडएक्सेल के निदेशक जेरी जारविस के अनुसार, “इस अध्ययन रिपोर्ट से एक बहस की शुरुआत होती है। अगर हम इन मुद्दों पर पहल कर रहे हैं तो हमें इसे सामूहिक रूप से करने की जरूरत है।”

एक ताजा सर्वे में बहुराष्ट्रीय कंपनियों में कार्यरत 90 फीसदी भारतीय प्रोफेशनल्स ने अगले पांच वर्ष में मौजूदा कौशल के आउटडेटेड होने की आशंका व्यक्त की है। ऐसे में उन्होंने नौकरी के बाजार में टिके रहने के लिए प्रशिक्षण की जरूरत को अहम बताया है। ग्लोबल वर्कफोर्स सॉल्यूशन प्रदाता फर्म कैली सर्विसेज के इस सर्वे में भारत के पांच हजार कर्मियों सहित दुनियाभर के एक लाख कर्मचारियों की राय जानी गई थी। सर्वे में शामिल 18 से 29 वर्ष और 30 से 47 वर्ष आयु वर्ग वाले 90 फीसदी कर्मियों ने अगले पांच वर्षे में काम करने के तौर-तरीके बदल जाने की संभावना व्यक्त करते हुए कौशल बढ़ाने की जरूरत को अहम बताया। वहीं, 69 फीसदी उत्तरदाताओं ने प्रशिक्षण को नियोक्ता और कर्मचारी की संयुक्त जिम्मेदारी माना।

एक तिहाई उत्तरदाताओं ने माना कि मौजूदा नियोक्ता द्वारा उपलब्ध कराया जा रहा प्रशिक्षण उनकी भविष्य की आवश्यकताओं को पूरा करने में सक्षम नहीं है। 48-65 वर्ष आयु वर्ग वाले कर्मचारी अपने प्रशिक्षण के स्तर को लेकर सबसे ज्यादा चिंतित पाए गए, जबकि 43 फीसदी ने कौशल व कैरियर में बढ़ोतरी के लिहाज से इसे अपर्याप्त करार दिया। 52 फीसदी प्रोफेशनल्स ने नौकरी के साथ प्रशिक्षण की जरूरत को महत्वपूर्ण बताया, जबकि 33 फीसदी कर्मियों ने प्रोफेशनल डेवलपमेंट कोर्स करने में रुचि दिखाई। 13 फीसदी ने स्वाध्याय और 3 फीसदी ने कॉलेज की पढ़ाई को अहम बताया। कौशल बढ़ाने को लेकर महिलाओं और पुरुषों के नजरिए में भिन्नता देखी गई। महिलाओं ने जहां नौकरी के साथ प्रशिक्षण को अहम बताया, वहीं पुरुषों ने प्रोफेशनल डेवलपमेंट कोर्स करने को सबसे बेहतर विकल्प करार दिया।

कंपनियां इम्प्लॉयबिलिटी स्किल्स पर इतना जोर क्यों देती हैं, इसका भी बड़ा दिलचस्प कारण है। कंपनियों में संबंधित फील्ड के एक्सपट्ïर्स होते हैं, जो नए कर्मचारियों को कार्य के विषय में टेक्नीकल ज्ञान व ट्रेनिंग देने का काम करते हैं। लेकिन मुख्य समस्या यह होती है कि इन कर्मचारियों को आधारभूत इम्प्लॉयबिलिटी स्किल्स में ट्रेनिंग करा पाना अत्यंत मुश्किल होता है। एक नए कम्प्यूटर इंजीनियर को एक सॉफ्टवेयर कंपनी असानी से ‘सी++ ’ व ‘जावा ’ की ट्रेनिंग दे सकती है परंतु उसे बेहतर टीम वर्क सिखाना, प्रोफेशनल ई-मेल लिखना या कम्युनिकेशन स्किल सिखा पाना कंपनियों के लिए एक मुश्किल भरा काम है। यही वजह है कि कई बार एक अपेक्षाकृत कम टेक्नीकल ज्ञान वाले युवा को, जिसमें इम्प्लॉयबिलिटी स्किल्स हों, नौकरी आसानी से मिल जाती है। जबकि

कंटीनुअस एंड कॉम्प्रिहेंसिव इवैल्यूएशन (सीसीई)—सीबीएसई January 22, 2010

सीबीएसई ने 9वीं क्लास के सभी सब्जेक्ट के क्वेश्चन पेपर फॉर्मैट में बदलाव करने का फैसला किया है। इस साल 9वीं क्लास के
हर पेपर में मल्टीपल चॉइस क्वेश्चन भी शामिल किए जा रहे हैं। बोर्ड का कहना है कि पहले 9वीं क्लास में यह प्रयोग किया जा रहा है। इसके बाद जो फीडबैक मिलेगा, उसके आधार पर 10वीं क्लास में भी इस फॉर्मैट को लागू किया जाएगा।

सीबीएसई के चेयरमैन विनीत जोशी ने बताया कि नैशनल करिकुलम फ्रेमवर्क (एनसीएफ) ने यह प्रस्ताव किया था कि सेकंडरी क्लासेज में मल्टीपल चॉइस क्वेश्चन शामिल किए जाने चाहिए। सो हर सब्जेक्ट में ये क्वेश्चन आएंगे और इनकी संख्या 10 से 15 पर्सेंट तक रहेगी। मल्टीपल चॉइस क्वेश्चन सिस्टम लागू करने का स्कूल भी समर्थन कर रहे हैं। प्राइवेट स्कूलों की संस्था नैशनल प्रोग्रेसिव स्कूल कॉन्फ्रेंस (एनपीएससी) के वाइस चेयरमैन एल. वी. सहगल का कहना है कि मल्टीपल चॉइस क्वेश्चन अभी तक प्रैक्टिकल एग्जाम में आते थे, अब थ्योरी में भी इसे शामिल किया जाएगा। इस सिस्टम से पूरा सिलेबस कवर करना आसान होगा। वैसे भी प्रतियोगी परीक्षाओं में मल्टीपल चॉइस क्वेश्चन काफी आते हैं। इसलिए स्टूडेंट्स को स्कूल लेवल पर ही ऐसे सवालों को हल करने की ट्रेनिंग मिल जाएगी।
विनीत जोशी का कहना है कि अब छठी से आठवीं क्लास में भी कंटीनुअस एंड कॉम्प्रिहेंसिव इवैल्यूएशन (सीसीई) लागू किया जाएगा। बोर्ड की ओर से जल्द ही इस बारे में सर्कुलर भेजा जाएगा। सीसीई स्कीम में पूरे साल क्लास में स्टूडेंट की परफॉर्मेंस और टर्म एंड एग्जाम के आधार पर पॉइंट ग्रेडिंग सिस्टम तैयार किया गया है। बहुत से स्कूल अब भी 8वीं तक ग्रेडिंग लागू नहीं करते। आने वाले समय में अब 8वीं क्लास तक के स्टूडेंट्स को भी ग्रेड दिए जाएंगे। इस साल 9वीं व 10वीं में ग्रेडिंग लागू कर दी गई है।

सीसीई स्कीम के जरिये 6 से 8वीं क्लास तक के स्टूडेंट्स का असेसमेंट प्रोसेस पूरी तरह से बदल जाएगा। सीसीई स्कीम में एक सेशन में दो टर्म होंगे। हर टर्म में एक समैटिव असेसमेंट (एसए) और दो फॉरमेटिव असेसमेंट (एफए) होंगे। एसए में टर्म एग्जामिनेशन होंगे, जबकि एफए यानी इंटरनल असेसमेंट में क्लासवर्क, होमवर्क, ओरल क्वेश्चन, क्विज, प्रोजेक्ट, असाइनमेंट के आधार पर स्टूडेंट को मार्क्स व ग्रेड मिलेंगे। सीसीई स्कीम में स्पोर्ट्स, स्काउटिंग, स्विमिंग, जिमनास्टिक, योग, फर्स्ट एड, बागवानी जैसी गतिविधियों से भी स्टूडेंट्स का असेसमेंट होगा। उनको इसमें भी ग्रेड मिलेंगे।

बोर्ड के इन प्रयासों से बच्चे का ओवरऑल डिवेलपमेंट हो सकेगा। एग्जाम को लेकर टेंशन भी कम होगी। सीसीई के जरिए स्टूडेंट्स का पूरे साल असेसमेंट होता है और क्लासरूम में स्टूडेंट्स को बेहतर तरीके से पढ़ाया जा सकेगा।

Last two days I have been observing the happenings in the world of education and careers. Thousands and lacks of career aspirants putting ahead their next step ( aglakadam ) into the CAT trap.. just to find that, for a change, this ime the Mouse has trapped the Cat …

Well this now looks a as an issue more serious than just a technical bug.. an examination f the international stature being conducted across the globe for admissions to an institute which is identified to churn out the Best of the best human resource to the industry.. could not even manage an entrance test… Is Technology so unmanageable in today’s world of hi tech revolution?

Or is this the out sourcing which is the culprit! but then an institute of the stature of IIM is only expected to outsource such critical function into a highly reputed and well trained & safe hands .. well Prometrics is a name of repute.. but is it that they were over confidant and did underestimate the technical challenges in the process..

Whatever may be the issue, this flaw of CAT examination mismanagement has highlighted a few thoughts :

1. Utter failure of a MANAGEMENT institute of world repute to MANAGE entrance examination! जिसकी एंट्रंस ऐसी हो, आगे क्या होगा (Jiski Entrance aisi ho, age kya hoga)?

2. Total lack of planning, no rehearsal before actual execution!

3. Failure of Outsourcing model in conducting online examinations!

4. Failure of antivirus protection systems, how safe are our websites?

Whatever may the reasons, the losers are the serious students who intended to appear for the CAT examination.. as is well known that this test is not just the test of your IQ & subject knowledge it as well tests you EQ… one needs to be well prepared, more than well studied to take on the tests.. I have seen students into the process of mental make over just before CAT examination dates .. they all will have to redo their efforts .. A few such students have their academic calendar’s ahead and some had even booked travel reservations for successive dates .. those from small cities and towns…

Is the IIM listening to the problems faced by such students?

Is CAT loosing its charm?

Last year, nearly 276,000 students across India took the test. This year around 50,000 students are expected to appear for the exam over a 10-day period.

The Common Admission Test has gone hi tech and on line this year onwards; In my opinion this has to do with the IIM trying to make the examination process simpler, faster and transparant. Is it because the test is going hi tech that there is less number of aspirants! At least this seems to be thought process of experts!

But I don’t think so. Todays generation is not at all tech afraid. In fact you give a latest technology gizmo to a class 7th student the chances are that she will decipher all the manual features in just a few minutes! Computer windows are very much comfortable for CAT aspirants by and large …

At least in todays Hi Tech era, Technology should not be blamed for less number of CAT participants ….

I am of the opinion that the new technical format of CAT has ensured that the Munnabhai’s are eliminated. I stand one to one informed by some CAT preparation coaching center owners that they used to encourage studets to appear for the CAT one year in advance, i.e. when they are not eligible & are in the preparation stage… I guess all these applicants got eliminated.

Further there could be hoste of pseudo CAT applicants who earlier did appear for tests only to take record of the test pattern and immediately after the tests they used to vomit the questions to the CAT Preparation centers to help them prepare their guess works, the markatable dossairs etc. Such participants would not have got an opportunity to appear for test this year.

Or is it because of the recession that people have lost charm for the management education? If this is so then the fate of the thousands and lacks of the B Schools Private Limiteds is under threat!

But for the bug at certain examination centers, due to which it is reported that the CAT had to be rescheduled today ( i.e. on 28.11.2009), I feel the new technological format of CAT is an excellent move and the organisers should be encouraged.

I invite friends to think over reasons for less number of CAT aspirants this year.. come lets explore …
